US stocks end 2006 with best gains in three years.

U.S. stocks finished 2006 with strong gains, with all three major stock averages booking their best performance since 2003. The Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at 12,463 at the unofficial 4 p.m. close on Friday, Dec. 29. the final trading session of the year 2006, marking a 16% gain for the year.

That full-year gain was fueled by a 6.7% fourth-quarter rise. This was the Dow's best performance since 2003.

General Motors Corp. and AT&T Inc. were the two best performing stocks among blue chips, while Intel Corp. and Home Depot Inc. were the two worst performers. The S&P 500 gained 14% for the year, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 10%, also marking the two averages' best performance since 2003.

On 27.12.2006 the Dow Jones climed to a new all time high of 12,510.57 points and an intraday all time high of  12,566.17 points.

OTHER NOTES:

NYSE Group Inc. said Friday that both the New York Stock Exchange and its NYSE Arca operations will be closed on Tuesday to observe the national day of mourning for Former President Gerald R. Ford, who died on Tuesday at the age of 93.

"My NYSE Group colleagues and I join all Americans in mourning the loss of President Ford, a man of great integrity and vision, and a dedicated public servant," said John Thain, the CEO of NYSE Group. He added: "It is appropriate that we honor President Ford and celebrate the life of a truly great American." The Nasdaq Stock Market Inc. said on Thursday that it would close trading on Tuesday to honor Ford.
